Dollar$ & Sense Education Advocacy

Accomplishments

The following is a short list of accomplishments that has a direct and positive impact on the education of our children and on our taxpayers.

Dollar$ and Sense organized a major forum of over 1200 people to address the issues of the now infamous S1701. We were heard in Trenton.

At the Joint Legislature’s “Special Sessions”, testimony was offered to three of the four Committees. Many of our suggestions appeared in the final recommendations. We were heard in Trenton.

Dollar$ and Sense was the only organization to stand up for the vast majority of school Superintendents when the wide brush of the SCI report maligned our district leadership. We were heard in Trenton.

In response to the School Funding Reform Act of 2008, Dollar$ and Sense became Amicus to the Supreme Court challenge by the Education Law Center. Had we not taken on this massive effort, the debate would have been limited to the Education Law Center and the Department of Education. We had to let all know; all children in all schools includes suburban children. We were heard in Trenton.

Dollar$ and Sense has published numerous white papers on important issues that impact all of us. These have included the need for a Geographical Cost of Living Index to ensure that those living in more expensive parts of the state get consideration when the funding formula was created. A special education paper addressed the issue of conflict resolution to cut down on the waste and lessen adversarial relationships. Research on how other states address high cost issues was presented in our white paper “Spending Reform – The Next Step”. Instead of complaining, we visited how others deal with high cost mandates. All of our papers have been delivered to our lawmakers. We were heard in Trenton.

Our current effort is called “SOLUTIONS”, released in October, 2009. Experts offer viable solutions for ten of today’s critical issues.

We are now on the road seeking support from school districts and Legislators. “SOLUTIONS” is the beginning for conversation. We WILL be heard in Trenton.

Dollar$ & Sense Education Advocacy Presents to the Senate Education Committee

To the Senate Education Committee:

We make the assumption that all want the best possible education for all children, and that all seek educational quality as well as fiscal efficiency. Our comments will recognize that other education advocacy organizations will discuss the issues of the 4% cap, burdensome regulations, the use of surplus in lieu of aide, salaries and benefits, NJQSAC, charters, vouchers, and even the dollars that public schools pay to parents for busing to private schools.

Separate The Rhetoric From The Realities

Education advocates from suburban, rural, and urban schools have a common goal. We all want the very best for our children. It is imperative that this common thread is used to tie together all education advocates within New Jersey.

New Jersey, like all states, faces the challenges of educating and education reform. We, however, face an additional problem. Our Governor, our Legislature, and probably most of the state’s adults want the problems of public education off the table. The burdens of fu… Continue
